WASSCE School records fluctuating trends in core subjects – WAEC
A fluctuating trend has been noticed in core subjects performance of students who had sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School over the years, the West African Examinations Council has said.
The worrying situation was disclosed after the management of the not-for-profit-making organization Monday, December 18, 2023, released the provisional results of the 2023 WASSCE for School at https://ghana.waecdirect.org.
“In the English Language 325,280 candidates obtained grades A1 to C6 representing 73.11%, while 32,408 had D7 representing 7.28%, 21,153 candidates obtained grade E8 representing 4.75% and 23,509 had F9 representing 5.28%.
In core mathematics 276,272 candidates had A1-C6, representing (62.23%), 36,373 candidates also obtained Grade D7 representing 8.19%, 33, 262 had Grade E8 representing 7.49% and 39,517 candidates had F9 representing 8.90%
In Integrated Science, 296,466 obtained grade A1-C6, representing 66.82% while 38,938 candidates obtained grade D7 representing 8.78%, 26,566 candidates obtained E8 presenting 5.99% and 25,029 candidates had F9, representing 5.64%.
In Social Studies, 340,867 candidates obtained A1-C6, representing 76.76%, 29,470 candidates also obtained grade D7, representing 6.64%, 19,616 had grade E8 representing 4.42% and 26, 186 obtained Grade F9, representing 5.90%,” the Council said in a statement.
It noted that there had been fluctuating trends in the performance of candidates in English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science while Social Studies showed an upward trend in the performance of candidates over four years
English Language in the year 2020, 2021,2022 and 2023, WAEC recorded 57.34%, 54.08% 60.39%, and 73.11%, respectively. In Core Mathematics, the council recorded 65.71%, 54.11% 61.39% and 62.23% over the four periods.
In the case of Integrated Science, WAEC recorded 52. 53 per cent, 65.70%, 62.45 per cent and 66.82 respectively over the four-year period. It said in Social Studies, 64.31%, 66.03%, 77.51%, and 76.76% respectively in the four years,” It said in a statement.
A total of 447,204 candidates, made up of 211,834 males and 235,370 females drawn from 975 public and private Senior High Schools entered for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School.
This figure indicates an increase of 5.8% compared to the 2022 entry figure of 422,883. The WASSCE took place at 834 centres. A total of 60 subjects, comprising 4 core and 56 electives were made available to candidates to choose from.
The 2023 edition of the WASSCE for School Candidates commenced on Monday, July 31, 2023, with the Visual Art Project work. The international examination administered at 834 examination centres ended on September 26, 2023.
