WAEC reveals processes to scrutinize 2023 BECE candidate’s scripts
The West African Examinations Council after it placed the scripts of more than 22,000 students who sat for the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination under scrutiny over mass cheating has disclosed processes to scrutinize the BECE candidate’s scripts.
WAEC in a blog post sighted by Thisterm.com said the scripts of 22,270 candidates in certain subjects under scrutiny for reported cases of mass cheating may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi said the management of the Council this week will commence a series of meetings with the 22,270 BECE candidates whose scripts are under scrutiny.
“There are two processes that we have to go through. One is to do our preliminary investigations, and then we would also have a one-on-one with the candidates,” the West African Examinations Council spokesman told the newspaper.
The not-for-profit-making organization following the completion of investigations into several cases of irregularity detected during the conduct of the BECE and marking of scripts released the examination results on November 9.
“The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to inform the public that it has released provisional results of candidates who sat for the BECE for both School and Private Candidates, 2023.
The Council will despatch the results of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school candidates to their respective Junior High Schools (JHS)through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education.
The results for Private Candidates can be accessed at the Council’s website https://www.waecgh.org. School candidates who so desire may also access their results online at the Council’s website,” WAEC said in a blog post on its website.
A total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 boys and 300,391 girls from 18,993 Junior High Schools participated in the 2023 BECE for School Candidates which began on Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023.
About the 2023 BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.
The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates was held at 2,137 examination centres across the country, while 15 centres mainly in the regional capitals were used for the BECE for Private candidates.
To ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the 2023 BECE for School and Private, A total of 2,137 supervisors, 2,000 supervisors and 21,027 invigilators were tasked to oversee the administration of the national examination.
