WAEC gives the number of final year JHS students to sit 2024 BECE

A total of 569,095 students, made up of 282,648 males and 286,447 females from 19,506 private and public Junior High Schools (JHSs) will sit for the 2024 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination for School Candidates.

Regarding BECE for Private Candidates, In a statement sighted by Thisterm.com, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said 1,366 candidates, comprising 735 males and 631 females are expected to participate in the examination.

Scheduled for Monday, July 8, 2024, to Monday, July 15, 2024, School candidates will be examined based on the newly introduced Common Core Curriculum, while Private Candidates will be examined on the old syllabus.

To be held in 2,123 centres across the country, WAEC says a total of 2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors and 19,973 invigilators have been engaged to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination for School Candidates.

For the national examination for Private Candidates, the not-for-profit-making organization said Fifteen (15) centres, mainly in the regional capitals will be used for the Basic Education Certificate Examination for Private candidates.

Ahead of the conduct of the national examination for Junior High School students, the Council has undertaken the following activities to ensure the smooth conduct of
the examination;

i. Organisation of sensitisation programmes for a cross-section of candidates throughout the country, educating them on the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination as well as providing tips for passing the Council’s examinations.

ii. Inspection of all depots for the storage of confidential materials to ensure that they meet the Council’s security requirements and where necessary works have been carried out on those that required fortification and refurbishment.

Arrangements have been made with the Ghana Police Service for the provision of 24-hour guard for all storage depots in the country.

iii. Distribution of examination stationery items such as objective answer cards, answer booklets, pencils etc. to the District Education Offices throughout the country.

iv. Holding of briefing sessions for District Directors of Education, District Examination Officers, Supervisors and Distributors from 24th to 28th June 2024 throughout the country to inform them of their role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the examination. Supervisors have been directed to brief invigilators for the examination at the various centres.

v. Briefing of WAEC officers who will be in charge of the BECE depots from where there will be a daily distribution of question papers took place on Tuesday, July
