WAEC gives reason for inability to pay invigilators and supervisors
The not-for-profit-making organization (WAEC) says government indebtedness of GH¢57.3 million for national and International examinations conducted in 2022 and 2023 is the cause of its inability to pay invigilators and supervisors.
The Finance Director of WAEC speaking at a press briefing said the indebtedness for 2022 is GH¢ 9.9 million while that of 2023 is GH¢47.4 million, comprising GH¢40 million for the main examination and GH¢7.4 million for practical.
Cornelius Azumah, the WAEC National Office Director of Finance, has therefore, assured the service providers including invigilators and supervisors that efforts were underway to get the money from the government in order to pay them.
“In 2022, we had to use some fees received for the 2023 examination to pay supervisors and invigilators for 2022. We have been following upon that and they promise that they will release funds to add soon so that we can pay the supervisors and invigilators for 2023 and get them ready for the 2024 examination,” he said.
The WAEC official added “So far we have taken some funds from them and we still have some arrears to receive,” he said in response to a question on the Council’s delay in paying service providers of the examinations conducted in the period.
In other news, Africa Education Watch as part of proposals to end questions leakage has called on the West African Examinations Council to increase supervisors and invigilators pay saying the current remuneration given to them is not enough.
The Watch in a 2021 WASSCE monitoring report copied to EducationWeb.com.gh said fees given to supervisors and invigilators when increased and paid on time would not make them compromise the invigilation of an examination.
“At present, WAEC pays external supervisors an amount of GHC 25 per session with invigilators earning GHC 14. This paltry amount, which is not even enough to cover transportation costs for many supervisors and invigilators,” it said.
According to the Think Tank, the current GHC25.00 per session for an external supervisor and GHC14.00 for invigilators, which even ends up arriving close to a year after the conduct of a paper, is a complete demotivator.
“To motivate supervisors and invigilators, WAEC must increase their fees and ensure prompt payment of the same. The current GHC 25 per session for an external supervisor and GHC 14 for invigilators is a demotivator,” EduWatch stated.
