SHS subjects to reduce from 63 amid new SHS curriculum – Report
The new Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) will reduce the number of subjects studied by students, an official of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has said.
In a social media post sighted by Thisterm.com, the Director of the education think tank, Kofi Asare said “The new SHS Curriculum which starts in the coming academic year reduces the number of subjects from 63 to 37.”
In a related development, the Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, Professor Edward Appiah says the new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum will be implemented in September this year.
When implemented, Mr Edward said that one of the most striking features of the new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum is it will shift towards subject-area-based learning thus reducing the number of subjects from 63 to 37.
The Curriculum and Assessment Council Professor highlighted the incorporation of physical education as an examinable subject and the introduction of flexible pathways, empowering students to explore their interests and talents.
“Furthermore, the curriculum places a strong emphasis on STEM education, integrating remedial assistance and interactive, practical exercises to foster a deeper understanding of scientific concepts,” he said at the event.
The NaCCA official disclosed the implementation date during his presentation on the much anticipated new second-cycle school curriculum at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Ahead of the implementation, the Curriculum Council has engaged relevant stakeholders in the education sector to solicit their input on the new Secondary Education Curriculum to be rolled out starting the 2024/2025 academic year.
Amid the second cycle school curriculum, NaCCA has also held a stakeholders’ engagement with the Regional Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the Ghana Education Services (GES) and agency PROs under the Ministry of Education.
The engagement forms part of a broader plan to involve key agencies within the Ministry of Education to help in the communication and implementation effort on the new Secondary Education Curriculum to be rolled out starting the 2024/2025 academic year.
