Scripps spelling bee producer announces schedule for 96th contest

Scheduled to take place in the United States of America (USA), the producers of Scripps National Spelling Bee have announced the date for the preliminary stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals stage of the competition.

A total of 245 spellers from Canada, the Bahamas, Germany, Ghana, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and all 50 states and the District of Columbia have qualified to compete in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition.

Spellers will compete in four segments of competition to determine who will take home the Scripps Cup: the Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals. All rounds of competition will be broadcast on ION platforms.

The two-night event begins with the Semifinals on May 29 at 8 p.m., followed by the Finals LIVE on May 30 at 8 p.m. ION is available FREE over the air, as well as on most cable, satellite and streaming providers.

The preliminaries will be held on Tuesday, May 28, from 8 a.m. to 7:40 p.m., the quarterfinals will be on Wednesday, May 29, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the semifinals will be on Wednesday, May 29, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and the finals will be on Thursday, May 30, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This year, three Ghanaian spellers, two girls and a boy will represent the Republic of Ghana as the African country to participate in the 96th edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee to take place in the United States of America.

They are Giovanni Adjei a pupil of Christ the King International School, N’Adom Darko-Asare DPS International Ghana and Abena Kwaffo from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (kNUST) Basic School.

Their participation in the upcoming 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee comes after they succeeded in the Ghana version of the spelling competition dubbed The Spelling Bee – Ghana.

The three spellers’ participation in the upcoming 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee was confirmed by the Young Educators Foundation, The Spelling Bee – Ghana organiser in a social media post sighted by Thisterm.com.

Of the ninety-nine (99) spellers who competed in the finale of this academic year’s The Spelling Bee – Ghana held on Saturday, February 3, Giovanni Adjei, speller number 41 emerged as the national competition winner.
