Nana-Addo to award best 10 private schools 2023 BECE candidates

Ahead of this year’s Independence Day, President Akufo-Addo on March 1, 2023 will award the ten students from private schools who performed excellently in the 2023 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In a social media post sighted by Thisterm.com, the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) said the awards ceremony which is the first of it kind will take place at Accra International Conference Centre in Greater Accra.

“President Akufo-Addo will be awarding the top ten best private schools 2023 BECE candidates 1st March, 2024 at the Accra International Conference Centre,” the Council said in a post titled Independence Day Awards for school children.

Conducted from August 7, 2023 to August 11, 2023, a total of 600,900 candidates, comprising 300,404 males and 300,496 females from18,993 public and private Junior High Schools (JHSs) sat for the 2023 national examination.

This figure includes 53 candidates with visual impairment, 366 with hearing impairment and 54 candidates with other special educational needs. The BECE was conducted at 2,137 centres. Out of the total number, 3,366 candidates were absent.

The West African Examinations Council following the completion of investigations into several cases of irregularity detected during the conduct of the examination and marking of scripts released the results of the BECE on November.

In a blog post sighted by Thisterm.com, It said subject results of 312 school candidates for bringing foreign materials, namely, prepared notes, text books and printed materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.

The management of the not-for-profit-making organization (WAEC) also indicated the entire results of 41 Junior High School (JHS) candidates were cancelled for possession of mobile phones in the examination hall.

The West African Examinations Council also withhold the subject results of 180 school candidates for various suspected offences and the entire r esults of 110 school candidates and 2 private Candidates for various suspected offences.

“The scripts of 22,270 candidates, in certain subjects are being scrutinizedfor reported cases of mass cheating. Their results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations,” the examinations body said in the post.
