NaCCA set to pilot new SHS curriculum in two Senior High Schools
The new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum will be piloted in two Second-cycle schools namely Okuapeman Senior High School and Mampong Senior Technical School, a National Council for Curriculum and Assessment official has said.
The Curriculum Council (NaCCA) official said his outfit after the Second cycle school curriculum pilot would take feedback from the Senior High Schools (SHS) and incorporate concerns before the curriculum is rolled out nationally.
In a discussion with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Reginald Quartey, Head of the Curriculum Directorate at NaCCA said the new Senior High School Curriculum will focus on social, emotional and behavioural issues and values.
He indicated that the Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) had consulted various stakeholders including persons with disabilities to make the new curriculum inclusive and cater for the needs of learners with disability.
“The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment with the support of T-Tel (Transforming Teaching Education and Learning), a Ghanaian not-for-profit organisation, has constituted an Inclusive Education Expert Advisory panel to strengthen accessibility for learners with disability,” Reginald Quartey, told the Ghana News Agency in the discussion.
In a related development, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment under the auspices of the Ministry of Education has given new names to two core subjects namely Integrated Science and Core Mathematics for Senior High Schools.
The Director-General of NaCCA, Professor Edward Appiah in an interview with the Daily Graphic said Integrated Science would be changed to General Science and Modern Mathematics instead of Core Mathematics.
Professor Edward Appiah in the discussion told Graphic Online’s Education Editor, Severious Kale-Dery that the renamed subjects would be studied by students pursuing General Arts, Business, Home Economics and Visual Arts.
The NaCCA Director-General however noted that effective this academic year, Senior High School (SHS) students in the country will no longer be required to study Core and Elective Mathematics as separate examinable subjects.
For the Core Mathematics, the Director-General of NaCCA, Professor Edward Appiahsaid they will take Additional Mathematics and no longer study Integrated Science because they were already studying Pure Science.
