NaCCA gives new names to two ‘Senior High School’ Core Subjects
The National Council and Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Education has given new names to two core subjects namely Integrated Science and Core Mathematics for Senior High Schools (SHSs).
In a discussion with the Daily Graphic, the Director-General of NaCCA, Professor Edward Appiah said Integrated Science would be changed to General Science and Modern Mathematics instead of Core Mathematics.
Professor Edward Appiah in the discussion told Graphic Online’s Education Editor, Severious Kale-Dery that the renamed subjects would be studied by students pursuing General Arts, Business, Home Economics and Visual Arts.
The NaCCA Director-General however noted that effective this academic year, Senior High School (SHS) students in the country will no longer be required to study Core and Elective Mathematics as separate examinable subjects.
For the Core Mathematics, the Director-General of NaCCA, Professor Edward Appiahsaid they will take Additional Mathematics and no longer study Integrated Science because they were already studying Pure Science.
In a related development, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has urged the general public particularly Junior High School students to disregard the news that the subjects for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be reduced to five.
An official of the Ghana Education Service (GES) who spoke to Thisterm.com on condition of anonymity said no such decision has been taken for Junior High School students to write 5 subjects in the 2024 BECE instead of the usual 9.
The Service clarification comes after the Director of Schools and Instructions Division at GES, Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah in an interview said 2024 BECE candidates will sit for only five (5) subjects in the national examination.
The GES staff said the decision, reached in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACCA) and various relevant stakeholders, aims to create a more focused and meaningful learning environment.
