MoE task NTC to provide ‘GTLE’ practice books to student teachers

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum as part of measures to ensure the majority of trainee teachers who sit for the Ghana teacher licensure examination pass has directed the National Teaching Council to provide them with practice books.

Speaking at a Ghana Teacher Prize Award ceremony, the Minister in Charge of Education urged the National Teaching Council to align the university curriculum with the requirements of the National teacher licensure examination.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum also mandated the management of the 46 government Colleges of Education and universities in the country to develop courses for the national examination to enable teachers to acquire professional teaching licenses.

“We want to create the opportunity to make the licensure exams painless and make sure that the majority of our teachers will pass the exams for the first time,” the Education Minister told stakeholders at the Teacher Awards event.

He further encouraged the management of the National Teaching Council (NTC) responsible for the GTLE to ensure that teachers got the opportunity to sit for the licensure exams as soon as they finished their teaching practice.

“The National Teaching Council (NTC) must make sure candidates have access to practice books and create more sample questions for candidates.

Universities must ensure that they have practice courses for candidates and adopt licensure as part of the curriculum in tertiary institutions,” he said as quoted in a Ghana News Agency (GNA) blogpost sighted by Thisterm.com.

Expressing concern about the 47 per cent of trainee teachers who failed the Ghana teacher licensure examination in 2023, he said the Ministry of Education has targeted 70 per cent to pass the subsequent license examinations.
