MoE launches 2023 National Education Week focus on STEM, TVET

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has begun this year’s National Education Week currently underway at the Labadi Beach Hotel for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and chart a course for the future of education in Ghana.

The theme for the 2023 edition of the National Education Week is “Education Delivery for National Transformation: The Case for STEM and TVET,” resonates deeply with my core vision for the educational landscape of our nation.

The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum addressing the gathering highlighted the pivotal role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in shaping Ghana’s educational trajectory.

He also underscored the transformative potential of STEM education in fostering innovative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and technological adeptness among our students.

Additionally, the Education Minister emphasized the critical importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in providing practical, job-ready skills, and closing the gap between education and employment.

The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a speech read on behalf of Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said TVET provides the skills and knowledge needed to meet the demands of the 21st-century workforce.

“As Ghana’s economy continues to grow and diversify, there is a growing demand for skilled workers in a variety of industries in Ghana hence the government’s Investment in Infrastructure, equipment and Human Resources in the TVET/STEM landscape,” he said.

The Director General for Ghana TVET Service, Madam Mawusi Nudekor Awity in her presentation said TVET is addressing the skills gap by providing students with the hands-on training they need to succeed in the workplace.

“STEM education is essential for innovation and economic development. STEM fields are at the forefront of innovation, and STEM skills are essential for developing new technologies and products. Ghana needs to invest in STEM education to ensure that it has the workforce it needs to compete in the global economy,” she said the at launch of the event.

Mr. David Prah, Deputy Director General for Operations in his submission at the panel discussion, outlined the New National Qualification framework approved for the TVET landscape to enable TVET learner’s Career progression and academic progression from National Certificate 2 to Doctor of Technology.

National Education Week is an annual event organized by the Ministry of Education to bring together policymakers, researchers, and experts in education to review sector performance and collectively strategize toward attaining sector targets in the ensuing year.
