Leonard K Marton wins WAEC Distinction Award for 2023 WASSCE

Former student of St. James Seminary Senior High School, Leonard Kofi Marton Amo-Kodieh following his excellent performance in last year’s WASSCE for School has been adjudged the winner of the 2023 WAEC Distinction Award.

Amo-Kodieh placed first in the 2023 West Africa Secondary School Exam (WASSCE) for school candidates both in Ghana and the best candidate out of the 2,327,342 candidates from five member countries of WAEC.

Dzandu Selorm, a former student of Labone Senior High School emerged as the first runner-up, while Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi also a former student of St. James Seminary took the second runner-up position.

In March this year, Leonard, Selorm and Daniel won the top three prizes as the best three (3) out of the 2,327,342 students from the five (5) member countries who sat for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

They won the WAEC International Excellence Awards as best candidates from the five (5) member countries who sat for the WASSCE 2023 and were also awarded at the 72nd Annual WAEC Council Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

For the 2023 WAEC Distinction Awards, the following students were named Programme Award winners:

1. General Arts – Laudina Adutwumwaa from St Monica’s Senior High School

2. Business – Kwasi Asare Adjei-Fordjour from St Augustine’s College, Cape Coast

3. Technical – Akosua Adjei Boateng from Juaso Senior High Technical School, Juaso- Ashanti

Following the students’ outstanding performance, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has applauded their school’s hardworking teachers and non-teaching staff for their dedication to training and nurturing the award-winning students.

The 2023 edition of the WAEC Distinction Awards was held on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the National Theatre. Present at the event were the Deputy Education Minister, Ntim Fordjour and the Director-General of GES, Dr Eric Nkansah.

About WAEC Distinction Awards

The Distinction Awards ceremony for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School is an initiative of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Endowment Fund (WEF). It is held annually to reward top performers in previous years WASSCE.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Endowment Fund (WEF) provides funds for awards to candidates with outstanding performance in the Council’s examinations at Senior High School (SHS) candidates.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Distinction Award, a candidate should obtain a minimum of eight (8) grade A1 at one sitting. An eligible candidate should not have engaged in any examination malpractice.

Selection procedure

Raw scores of eligible candidates are standardised ie converted to T-scores. The T-scores are used to rank the candidates and select the award winners.
