GTEC resolves UCC Vice-Chancellor appointment termination issue
The issue with the appointment termination of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong has been resolved, the management of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has disclosed.
This comes after GTEC which is the regulator of tertiary institutions in the country asked the Vice Chancellor to remain in office while all issues about his appointment are being looked at with all stakeholders to bring lasting peace on campus.
The Commission in a letter also directed the Registrar of the University to furnish his office with all relevant documents concerning the renewal and purported termination of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor to avoid interruption in the management of the University.
In a letter, the Director of GTEC, Prof Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, also directed that all correspondence, court processes and communiques be forwarded to the Commission for perusal so that the matter can be handled prudently.
GTEC’s directive follows a letter written and signed by the Chairman of the University Council, Prof Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, indicating the appointment of Vice-Chancellor of Cape Coast-based University has been terminated.
The reason given by the Council Chair is that Prof Boampong will attain age 60 in 2025 and will therefore not be able to complete his two-year tenure before he attains the compulsory retirement age of 60 on September 18, 2025.
However, seven members of the UCC Governing Council in a letter on 1st August 2024 stated that the termination of appointment was not discussed at their last meeting held on 30th July 2024 and wondered why the Council Chairman could do such a thing.
“We have sighted with shock, a letter solely and privately written by the Chairman of Council, Prof H.S. Amonoo-Kuofi, purporting to terminate the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof John Nyarko Boampong
Council has not met to discuss or take such a decision and that, at its last meeting held on Tuesday, 30th July 2024, records available indicate that matters discussed and decided upon did not include the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure,” it said.
The seven members of the council added “No such decision has been made by Council in any of our meetings whatsoever. Council met on 30th July 2024 and no such matter was discussed, and neither was any such decision made.
The seven members are Prof Eric Anane (Convocation), Dr Jerry Opoku-Ansah (UTAG Rep), Mr Samuel Danso Akoto (Alumni Rep), Mr Vincent Kojo Siabi (SRC Rep), Mr Kwabena Adjepong (GRASAG Rep), Mr Benjamin Frank Hagan (TEWU-TUC Rep) and Mr Mohammed Quanson (CHASS Rep).
