The Spelling Bee is a literacy programme that teaches primary children between ages 7 and 13, how to improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn and understand word concepts and develop English usage which will help them all their lives. TSB is affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the USA

The spelling programme started in 2007 with only 6 schools, where Maria Isabel Kubabom SOS Herman Gmeiner School, Tema won and went on to the United States of America (USA) to represent Ghana at the Scripps Spelling Bee

Maria’s then appearance at the 80th Scripps Spelling Bee made history as the first time an African was ever represented in this international contest. Ghana has since been the only African country participating.

The Spelling Bee Ghana is run by the Young Educators Foundation, a Ghanaian charity whose vision is to improve the lives of our youth through literacy, as well as champion the cause of education.

The Spelling Bee organizers strongly believe that education cannot be limited to only what is taught in the classroom; co-curriculum. As such, our programmes are meant to complement the school curriculum.
