Ghanaian students advances to Scripps Spelling Bee quarter-finals
Three Ghanaian spellers, two females and a male competing in the ongoing 2024 edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee taking place in the United States of America (USA) have advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition.
This comes after Giovanni Adjei, a Christ the King International School pupil, N’Adom Darko-Asare of DPS International Ghana and Abena Kwaffo from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Basic School aced all 3 rounds of the preliminaries.
“All three spellers from Accra, Ghana easily handled their Round 3 words and Abena Kwaffo, Giovanni Adjei and N’Adom Darko-Asare moved on to Round 4! An entire nation roars with pride!” organizers of Scripps said in a post.
In the social media post sighted by Thisterm.com, the Spelling Bee producers said a total of 176 spellers contested in round 3 of the preliminaries adding that 148 of them move on to the quarterfinals slated for tomorrow morning.
A total of 245 spellers qualified to compete in the 96th edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The youngest among the spellers is Sanil Thorat, a third grader from Fairfield Elementary Magnet School in Shreveport, Louisiana.
This year, Ghana is the only African country participating in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. As the only African country in the competition, Ghana has been sending spellers to compete in the US for close to 18 years now.
