Following the outstanding performance of Ghanaian candidates in the 2023 edition of the WASSCE for School, some students have received an International Excellence Award from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The International Excellence Awards instituted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is to honour candidates with outstanding performance at the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Three Ghanaian students swept all the top three West African Examinations Council International Excellence Awards of the 2023 WASSCE for School written by a total of 2,327,342 candidates from the five-member countries of the council.

Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton, formerly of St James Seminary Senior High School (SHS), who is currently reading Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, was adjudged the overall winner. He topped with a score of 623.5512.

Dzandu Selorm, formerly of the Labone SHS now a medical student at the KNUST, took the second spot with a score of 623.1882, while another former St James Seminary SHS student, Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, currently at the Ashesi University placing third with 622.4438.

To be considered eligible for an Excellent Award, a candidate must obtain a grade A1 in at least eight subjects, including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences and Integrated Science as well as one subject category of the core subjects.

In a related development, the 72nd Annual Council meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is ongoing at the Bintumani Conference Center in Freetown from Monday, March 18, 2024, to Friday, March 22, 2024

The 72nd Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council is on the theme “Moving Towards the Light: Provisioning Higher Education” and the International Excellence Awards for WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023.

Funded by the government of f Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, the President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio is reportedly the special guest of honour at the Council meeting.
