Ghana version ‘WASSCE for School’ International Standard – WAEC
Despite conducting this year’s WASSCE for School for Ghanaian candidates separately from candidates of West African Examinations Council member countries, WAEC says the Ghana version of the examination will be of International standard.
The Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mr John Kapi in a statement said “The Council wishes to stress that despite the difference in the period for the conduct of the examination, the standard of the examination remains unchanged.”
“At the end of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School, International Preliminary Coordination Meetings are held to finalize draft marking schemes
Further, right after the marking exercise, the International Awards Committee meets to determine the grade boundaries for all subjects,” the statement released by the organization and sighted by Thisterm.com noted.
The spokesman for WAEC comment comes after former president John Dramani Mahama said Ghana ceased writing the WASCCE for School in 2016, a situation he said had contributed to the fallen standard of Ghanaian students.
Challenging the 2024 WASSCE for School results, Mahama said some invigilators tasked to overseer the examination were lax, allowing teachers to assist students in answering questions hence the high numbers of students passing.
“In many places, they let the children cheat. You go to places and the teachers are conniving with the students to cheat. The effect will be seen later,” the leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama said.
He added “You certify these children saying they are of this standard either the BECE or SSCE, and that child will use that certificate, go abroad to a school, and they will find out that your qualification is not up to the standard you say it is.”
John Dramani Mahama speaking at an event said the cheating incident in the just-ended West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will have dire consequences on the country’s educational system in future.
