GES earlier in a press statement gave students from Tuesday, May 7, 2024, to Friday, May 10, 2024, to participate in the registration exercise administered by the Electoral Commission to enable them to cast their vote in the upcoming polls

But in a recent statement sighted by Thisterm.com, the management of the Education Service said the students who are 18 years and above and participating in the exercise will return to their various campuses on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

“A sequel to our letter referenced GES/S&ID/MSCL/2024/045 and dated 6th May 2024 on the above-mentioned subject matter, reference is made to the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s statement on Tuesday, 7 May 2024 regarding the challenges associated with ongoing limited registration exercise which have slowed down the registration process.

Accordingly, the Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has extended the permission period for students aged 18 and above participating in the exercise to Tuesday, 14th May 2024 to enable them to register.

Regional Directors are kindly requested to communicate this information to all Heads of SHS/SHTS within their jurisdiction for compliance,” the Ghana Education Service (GES) said in a release dated May 9, 2024.

In a social media post, the Ghana Education Service also said “Management has extended the permission period of students 18 and above to Tuesday 14th May 2024. Students, teachers, parents and the general public are to take note

All Senior High School (SHS) and Senior High Technical School (SHTS) students who are 18 years and above are encouraged to participate in the limited voter registration exercise

This directive is in accordance with the constitutional right of all Ghanaian citizens to exercise their voting privileges.”

The Ghana Education Service (GES) management in the statement said the reason for the extension is to make sure that each eligible and qualified student is registered despite the challenges faced by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The ongoing registration voter process for individuals who have turned 18 since the last registration period according to the management of the Electoral Commission of Ghana will continue for 21 days, ending on May 27.
