piloting of new SHS curriculum

The Ghana Education Service has commenced piloting the new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) in 33 second-cycle schools across the country.

To be implemented fully in September for the 2024/2025 academic year, the new SHS curriculum, among others, is integrated with climate change, forestry and green economy issues to promote environmental studies.

The Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, speaking at an event said general implementation after the piloting will commence at all schools beginning in the 2024/2025 academic year.

“Your Excellency, the Senior High School curriculum review has also been completed and is currently being piloted in some 33 schools across the country. Again, the new SHS curriculum is very well integrated with climate change and green economy issues,” he said.

The GES Director-General added, “We are confident that through these integrations, our students will develop a deeper interest in climate change and green economy issues and practices, ultimately impacting our planet positively.”

In other news, the Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Prof Edward Appiah says the new SHS curriculum will reduce subjects studied at the Senior High School level from 63 to 37

When implemented, the NaCCA official said one of the most striking features of the new SHS curriculum is it will shift towards subject-area-based learning thus reducing the number of subjects from 63 to 37.
