GES announces criteria for Upper East region teachers recruitment

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it will only consider newly trained teachers who have completed their course of study, national service and passed the teacher licensure examination for recruitment to teach in Bawku and Pusiga in the Upper East region.


“Only teachers who have successfully completed their course of study, passed their licensure examination as well as done their national service qualified under the arrangement,” an official of the Ghana Education Service has said.

Describing the recruitment as special, the Ghana Education Service (GES) official said the Ministry of Finance through the Ministry of Education in due course will grant his outfit a financial clearance for the new teachers recruitment.

He said once all the conditions for the special arrangement to recruit the teachers are met, the Minister of Education would fast-track the financial clearance for such persons to be employed to teach in basic schools in the Upper East region.

As the management of the Service awaits the financial clearance, the official said the Ghana Education Service (GES) currently is putting together the list of interested teachers for onward submission for the next line of action.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the GES official expressed optimism that the necessary processes would be completed ahead of time to enable the new teachers to start work at the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year in September.


The recruitment has become necessary as majority of teachers posted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) leave their posts in Bawku and Pusiga in over security concerns amid the not ending soon conflict in the Upper East region.

It is for this reason the Ministry in Charge of Education (MoE) has granted the Ghana Educaiton Servce (GES) a special arrangement to recruit qualified teachers who are indigenes to teach in public basic schools in the area.

In a related development, the management of the Ghana Education Service has scheduled June 17, 2024 to end the 2024/2025 recruitment of first batch of degree holders from all the 46 government Colleges of Education.

In a post sighted by, the Service responsible for recruiting teachers said the recruitment portal will be open from May 15, to June 17, 2024, adding that applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.

Meanwhile, an official of the GES has said the Ministry of Finance’s (MoF) financial clearance for Ghana Education Service (GES) to recruit newly trained teachers into service for this academic year will expire on December 31, 2024.
