Dr Bawumia pledges free tertiary education scholarships for PWDs
If elected president in the upcoming December 7 election, flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says he will offer free tertiary education scholarships for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
In an encounter with the Clergy in Sefwi-Wiawso in the Western North Region, on Friday, the Vice-President and leader of NPP for the 2024 election said the policy will form part of a comprehensive programme for Persons with Disabilities
“We are giving scholarships to all manner of people but I want to dedicate some of the money from the scholarship Secretariat and GETFUND to provide free tertiary education, both tuition and accommodation to all persons with disabilities, who will make it to the universities so that they can all benefit from that,” he stated.
Mr Mahamudu added that as Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, he had been engaging in lots of activities to support the vulnerable, and his government will prioritise broader support for PWDs and vulnerable members of the society.
In other news, the Ghana Education Service (GES) says plans are underway for the central government to include public special needs basic schools in the flagship policy Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show monitored by Thisterm.com, former Director-General of GES, Prof Kwasi Opoku Amankwa said the government will communicate more details on the development to the general public.
“We have the majority of special needs schools at the basic level and what we are planning is to add them to the Free SHS policy even though they are basic schools and because they are special,” he told the host of the Kokrokoo show.
