BECE will have no optional subjects under CCP curriculum – NaCCA

BECE malpractice

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has denied the claim indicating there will be optional subjects for candidates to sit for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in July this academic year.

NaCCA’s comment comes after a source close to the West African Examinations Council said candidates would be examined on 8 compulsory subjects and have the option to select one additional optional subject (Ghanaian Language, French or Arabic).

The compulsory subjects for the 34th edition of the examination the source indicated are Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English Language, Creative Arts, Computing, Career Technology and Religious and Moral Education (RME).

However, the National Curriculum Council denying the claim said students will be examined on the same number of subjects under the Common Core Programme (CCP) Curriculum: English Language, Mathematics, and Science.

Other compulsory subjects, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) source indicated are Social Studies, Ghanaian Language, Religious and Moral Education, Creative Arts, Career Technology, Computing, French, and Arabic.

“All learners are expected to study and be examined in English Language, Mathematics, and Science. Social Studies, Ghanaian Language, Religious and Moral Education, Creative Arts, Career Technology, Computing, French, and Arabic

It is important to note that there are no optional subjects for the CCP Curriculum. With the Ghanaian Language subjects, schools are to choose any of the Ghanaian Languages based on the schools’ capacity, and learners will be examined on these Ghanaian Languages at the BECE,” NaCCA said in a statement shared with Thisterm.com

The NaCCA management added “This policy has not changed; therefore, suggestions that the Common Core Programme introduces optional subjects for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are incorrect.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) remains committed to promoting and preserving indigenous languages to create a heightened sense of Ghanaian identity among learners.

Provisions have been made for these Ghanaian languages: Twi (Asante), Twi (Akuapem), Ewe, Ga-Adangbe, Dagbanli, Nzema, Fante, Gunune and others to be examined at the BECE level.

This option does not imply that any subject has been made optional but instead provides an opportunity for learners to showcase their proficiency in their mother tongue.

We encourage parents, teachers, learners, and the public to refer to official sources such as the Ministry of Education or our website and social media handles for accurate and timely information about the CCP and other educational policies.”
