Nigeria’s participation in the competition follows a Lucid Education Initiative partnership with the Young Educators Foundation, sponsors of The Spelling Bee – GH. The collaboration aims to ignite a passion for spelling and literacy among Nigerian youth

“We aim to equip students with the skills to use words as powerful communication tools from an early age,” said Eugenia Tachie-Menson, CEO of the Young Educators Foundation.

She added “We are elated that Nigeria will be joining Ghana in May of 2025 as the second African country in the global competition.

The National Spelling Bee, in Ghana, has reignited a national discourse about the importance of literacy and spelling correctly, whilst birthing many student-centred programmes in mainstream media.

We are certain that the benefits Ghanaian students have accrued from participating in this programme for nearly 2 decades, will cascade on to Nigerian students as well.”

Afolajimi Akinyoyenu, CEO of Lucid Education Initiative, on his part, said: “This program offers a platform for Nigerian youth to showcase their literacy prowess on a global stage, changing the rather tired and erroneous narrative the African child only hungers for food.”

About Scripps Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a prestigious spelling competition for students in the United States, organized by The E.W. Scripps Company. It is held annually in Washington, D.C., and is considered one of the most renowned and challenging spelling bees in the world.

Students from across the country, typically between the ages of 5 and 15, participate in local and regional bees to qualify for the national competition. The bee is known for its rigorous testing of spelling skills, with words ranging from simple to extremely complex and obscure.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has a long history, dating back to 1925, and has become a beloved and iconic American tradition. It is often referred to as the “Super Bowl of Spelling” and is broadcast on television, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch the competition unfold.

The bee’s purpose is not only to celebrate academic excellence but also to promote a love of language, learning, and literacy. It has inspired many young people to develop a passion for words, language, and education.
