3 spellers to represent Ghana at 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee

Scheduled to take place in the United States of America (USA), three Ghanaian spellers will represent the Republic of Ghana as the only African country to participate in the 2024 edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee this year.

Giovanni Adjei a pupil of Christ the King International School, N’Adom Darko-Asare DPS International Ghana and Abena Kwaffo from KNUST Basic School are to represent Ghana after succeeding in 2024 The Spelling Bee – Ghana.

Their participation in the upcoming 96th edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee was confirmed by the Young Educators Foundation, The Spelling Bee – Ghana organiser in a social media post sighted by Thisterm.com.

Of the ninety-nine (99) spellers who competed in the finale of this academic year’s The Spelling Bee – Ghana held on Saturday, February 3, Giovanni Adjei, speller number 41 emerged as the national competition winner.

Giovanni Adjei’s winning word was G-U-I-J-O. For his prize, he received a prize package worth $10,000-plus, including an all-expense-paid trip to represent Ghana at the upcoming 2024 Scripps Spelling Bee to be held in the US.

The 2024 Spelling Bee winner also received a 1-year Merriam-Webster Dictionary subscription, $500 spending money, GH₵1,000 GOIL PLC fuel coupons, Indomie Ghana products, an engraved trophy and a Gold medal.

1st-runner-up, N’Adom Darko-Asare was awarded a GH₵5,000 cash prize, A fully installed Dstv Ghana HD Zapper decoder with 4-month compact viewing, Indomie Ghana products, GH₵500 GOIL PLC fuel coupons and a silver medal.

The 2nd-runner-up, Abena Kwaffo also received a GH₵5,000 cash prize, A fully installed Dstv Ghana HD Zapper decoder with 4-month compact viewing, Indomie Ghana products, GH₵500 GOIL PLC fuel coupons and a bronze medal

About Scripps Bee

The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that almost a century later their literacy effort would reach millions of students each year.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an annual spelling bee held in the United States. The bee is run on a not-for-profit basis by The E. W. Scripps Company and is held at a hotel or convention center in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area during the week following Memorial Day weekend.
